The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) has developed a Step Calculator to encourage residents to participate in walking during Walktober and throughout the year. The tool allows participants to track their steps and walking distances, while also providing MDOT with anonymous information about where and how far Marylanders are walking. Step tracking can be used to to motivate individuals, families, and communities to walk more often by showing them their progress and celebrating the benefits of active transportation.By analyzing this information, MDOT can better understand walking trends, identify opportunities for safer and more accessible pedestrian infrastructure, and strengthen efforts to create healthier, more connected communities for all Marylanders.

Disclaimer: your data will be used to anonymously calculate where and how much you are walking.

How We Calculate Steps to Miles

Our application accurately converts your total steps into a corresponding distance in miles using a scientifically derived formula based on average stride length. This approach provides a more personalized and precise calculation than simple, fixed conversion rates.

1. Determining Stride Length

Stride length is the distance covered with each step. Our application calculates your estimated stride length by taking your height in inches and multiplying it by an average scientifically validated constant of 0.473.

(Total Steps × Stride Length) ÷ 63,360 = Total Distance in Miles

2. Converting Steps to Miles

Once your unique stride length is determined, we convert your total steps into an equivalent distance. We use the number of inches in a mile to get a precise result.

(Total Steps × Stride Length) ÷ 63,360 = Total Distance in Miles

This precise method accounts for individual differences, providing a more reliable conversion for your fitness tracking needs.

*The conversion constant is based on scientifically validated data.
